Joseph Frederick Stampfer ’52
Joseph Frederick Stampfer ’52 passed away at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on September 20, 2019. “Ted” was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and moved to Santa Fe in the late 1930s. He came to Dartmouth from Santa Fe High School and received a degree in chemistry in 1952. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the Dartmouth Outing Club, and the ski patrol. He later earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of New Mexico. During the summers he worked in the Los Alamos National Laboratory and was hired full-time after graduation. He was at Enewetak Atoll for atomic bomb tests. He left the lab in the late 1960s and took a job with the University of Missouri at Rolla, where he taught and did research in the cloud physics department. He came back to Santa Fe in the late 1970s and again worked at the lab until he retired in 1991. One of Ted’s greatest pleasures was flying. He became a pilot in his early 20s and spent many years flying with his family around the country. Ted and his wife, Anne, were married in 1953. They had a great love for travel, and together they visited dozens of countries. Ted was preceded in death by Anne, who passed away in 2017. He was a bone cancer survivor. Ted is survived by children Jeff and Becky and their spouses and one granddaughter.
