Joseph Andrew Baute ’52

Joseph Andrew Baute ’52 died on September 6 in Surry, New Hampshire. Joe was born on January 30, 1928, in Providence, Rhode Island, and grew up near East Greenwich, Rhode Island. After graduating from high school in 1946, Joe entered the Marine Corps and was discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1948. Joe enrolled at Dartmouth but was called back into the Marine Corps to serve during the Korean War. Joe returned to Dartmouth, graduating in 1952 and receiving his master’s from the Thayer School of Engineering in 1954. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi. Upon graduation, Joe moved to Keene, New Hampshire, where he began a 39-year career at Markem Corp., starting as an engineer and retiring as chairman and CEO in 1993. A Renaissance man with many interests, Joe’s passion for aviation led him to perfect his piloting skills in Archie, his single-engine Piper Cherokee, earning his instrument and commercial licenses. In the Keene community Joe served as a member on the boards of numerous civic and church community services. Beyond Keene, Joe served as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston board. He also served on the boards of numerous business organizations. His deepest passion was for his wife of 49 years, Stephanie, who survives him with children Susan, Tu’80, Alison ’77, Sarah, and Joseph and their spouses; stepdaughter Deborah; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Joe was predeceased by his first wife, Rebecca.
