John William VanDyke Jr. ’67

John William VanDyke Jr. ’67 of San Mateo, California, died on August 26, 2019. He came to the College from Sioux City, Iowa, and the Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, Minnesota. He majored in economics and was a brother of Zeta Psi, active in the Tucker Foundation, and played on the varsity golf team for three years. After graduation John married Mary Geiger in 1968 while earning his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He returned to Sioux City in 1969 to begin work at the Toy National Bank, ultimately serving as president and board chairman, following in the tradition of his family, which founded the bank in 1912. John was elected to the city council of Sioux City in 1983 and was ultimately appointed mayor in 1986. In 1988 John and Mary moved to San Mateo, where he continued his many business and civic activities. His roommate and golf teammate, Jack Ferraro ’67, recalls, “John was always a gentleman. Interestingly he absolutely loved Greek and Roman studies and, although he majored in economics, took all the courses offered by the College in that area. He had a beautiful golf swing and was an excellent iron player (although he never had much interest in his short game). He will be greatly missed.” John is survived by Mary, children Bill and Jane and their spouses, and five grandchildren.
