John Sargent North ’52

John Sargent North ’52 passed away on December 14, 2016, due to esophageal cancer. He was born on August 25, 1930, in Woodsville, New Hampshire, grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and graduated in 1948 from Ridgewood High School. John graduated from Dartmouth in 1952 and earned his M.B.A. at the Amos Tuck School of Business in 1953. He then joined the Navy, serving as an officer for two years. In 1956 John and Judy (Hyde) were married. A 30-year career with AT&T and the Bell Telephone System began in Michigan in 1955. In 1973 John moved east, where he worked first at AT&T in New York City and later for 10 years in Boston as chief operating officer of New England Telephone. In 1985 John took early retirement and he and Judy acquired a 200-acre farm in Lyme, New Hampshire. John also became quite active in the Lyme community. In 2005 they downsized from their beloved farm to a house in Etna, New Hampshire. In 2010 they downsized further and moved to a retirement community in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Volunteer service and board roles were an important part of John’s life. He chaired the Boston Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of Shawmut Bank and Alice Peck Day Hospital, among many others. An active member of the Dartmouth community, he held at least nine different positions, including class president. Judy, children Jeffrey, David ’86, Deborah and Susan and five grandchildren survive him.
