John Philip Brower ’52

John Philip Brower ’52, a resident of the Whittier Manor of Jacaranda Trace in Venice, Florida, passed away on July 23. He was born in Cincinnati on December 30, 1930. His family moved to Winnetka, Illinois, where he attended New Trier High School, graduating in 1948. He was an Eagle Scout and received the Award of the Arrow. He graduated from Dartmouth with a major in economics. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta (serving as president his senior year) and Sphinx. He was a varsity letterman in baseball and ice hockey. He served in the Navy from 1952 to 1954, mostly on ships in the Caribbean and the Pacific theater. He loved sports, and in 1948 his American Legion baseball team won the national tournament. He played in the minor leagues for the Chicago White Sox, was a goal judge for the Chicago Blackhawks, helped start the Edina (Minnesota) Hockey Association, and was involved in the development of the Braemar Hockey Arena. John was also a member of the National Ski Patrol for many years. He was a member of the Edina Country Club and the Venice Golf and Country Club. He worked for Joseph T. Ryerson Steel Co. for 40 years, eventually serving as the general manager of the Minneapolis plant. He is survived by Jennette, his wife of 66 years, brother Hugh ’50, daughter Marcia, son Tom, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
