John H. Plunkett ’57

John H. Plunkett ’57 of Rye, New York, passed away on July 14. John graduated from Deerfield Academy. He was a history major and a member of Sigma Chi. Music was his interest. He was in the Glee Club and played guitar and piano in the Barbary Coast, Sultans, and the Sachems. John earned an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan School of Business and began a business career in First National City Bank’s trust training program. After four and a half years, he shifted to Brown Brothers Harriman and worked his way up to head the institutional investment department. In 1977 he joined two friends in Greenwich, Connecticut, in establishing Thorson, Brown & Plunkett Inc., an investment counseling firm. It grew through the years and provided financial services to institutional and individual clients. In 2002 he moved the business to Purchase, New York, one mile from his home in Rye, where he had lived since 1940. He was a single parent to his three children, and served as a trustee of their school, Rye Country Day School. He remarried in 1984 to Diana, and the marriage added three more children. His music interest continued with guitar (mostly jazz) and a bit of piano. He enjoyed playing golf, and above all treasured his time with his grandchildren. He is survived by Diana and his children, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
