John H. Garrison ’66

John H. Garrison ’66, retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general, passed away unexpectedly May 23. The son of a military family, John grew up on various Air Force bases around the globe. At Dartmouth he played intramural sports, was a member of Sigma Nu, and was named distinguished cadet in the Air Force ROTC program. He was commissioned an officer before moving to Ohio State University to obtain a master’s in political science. A Vietnam War veteran, John served his country with honor for 30 years. His distinguished Air Force career took him all over the world, from Germany to Thailand. Assignments included serving as international politico-military affairs officer and defense attach to the U.S. embassy in China and as director of intelligence for the U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command. His major awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal. John was a kind soul and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family was most important and always at the forefront of his thoughts; he was happiest when surrounded by friends and family. John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol; son Jeffrey; son Brian and his wife, Sara; granddaughter Madelyn; and four brothers and their families.
