John Greenwood ’51
John Greenwood ’51, a longtime commercial banker, entrepreneur, and proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, died on July 12 in Fullerton, California. He was cited by the California state legislature for his many contributions to Fullerton and the wider Southern California area. John’s 36-year banking career included senior positions with Bank of America, Continental Illinois Bank, United California Bank, and Toronto Dominion Bank. He helped to organize several new banks and was chief executive of a minority lending consortium owned by the Los Angeles Clearing House. Fluent in Portuguese (he was born in Brazil) and Japanese, he lived for several years in Japan as a banker and a Marine. John’s enthusiasm for the Marine Corps was an important element of his adult life. After two years of active duty he remained in the reserves, retiring as a captain in 1965. For many years he attended reunions of his officer training class. At Dartmouth John majored in geography and was active in the International Relations Club, Spanish Club, Dartmouth Quarterly, and intramural sports. He served as president of the Dartmouth Alumni Club of Southern California. He earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University in 1956. John was the founding president of the Los Angeles Job Development Corp., president of the Foreign Trade Association of Southern California, and chair of the Fullerton investment advisory commission. He and his late wife, Joan, delighted in their vacation home in the Catskills in upstate New York.
