John E. Ives ’51

John E. Ives ’51, a national leader in the field of hospital administration, died in Gainesville, Florida, on November 29, 2018. He was also a respected mediator who volunteered on more than 900 cases. He was an avid golfer who served in leadership roles in Florida and U.S. golf associations. John was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa and active in the Dartmouth Players as an undergraduate. As an alumnus he was a member of the ’51 executive committee and the Moosilauke Forum. He served for two years after graduation as an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps in Korea. John earned a master’s in hospital administration from Yale and spent 40 years in a succession of senior management positions at major U.S. hospitals, including service as CEO and president of University of Connecticut Hospital, University of Florida Hospital, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, and the Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. He also led numerous health industry boards and committees and was involved with several community organizations in Florida. He helped establish the Ronald McDonald House of North Central Florida. John’s golfing interests and activities included coaching, officiating, and managing tournaments. Junior golf programs became a special interest when his grandson took up the game. The Boys High School Golf Classic Tournament in North Central Florida is named for John and his wife, Ann.
