John D. Fenniman ’65

John D. Fenniman ’65 passed away July 11, 2023, in Denver from Alzheimer’s disease. He came to Dartmouth from West Hartford, Connecticut, via Loomis School. A history major, he was an active member of the Dartmouth Outing Club and the Mountaineering Club and received his master’s in cartography from the University of Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965-68 and was a Vietnam veteran. Passionate about mountain climbing and the outdoors, he was a member of the Appalachian Mountain club, hiking the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Pennsylvania hills. After he and Sue married and they both earned M.S. degrees from Wisconsin, they lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where John worked as a cartographer for Rand McNally. In 1974 they moved to Lakewood, Colorado, where they raised two daughters and John worked for the Denver branch of the U.S. Geological Survey. Family and friends remember John for his nurturing way, understated community spirit, and love of family and friends, a good story, nature, Colorado mountain trails, history, and classical music and opera. They also remember his weekly letters to family and friends, back rubs, and chocolate chip cookies. He was a devout dog lover who took his beloved golden retrievers on four walks a day. John is survived by Sue, daughters Jennifer and Heather and their partners, and brother Bill.
