John Benton Knox ’52
John Benton Knox ’52 died on December 28, 2024, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born March 12, 1931, in New Rochelle, New York, and moved to Philadelphia and then Haverford, Pennsylvania, where he attended the Haverford School for Boys. He went on to Dartmouth, graduating in 1952. John served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam before the war, when the French were still a presence. Following his service, he earned an M.B.A. at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. His first job was at Young & Rubicon in New York City. After a corporate and single life for a number of years, he and Regina Gilmartin married in 1984 and moved to Maine, first to Blue Hill. An opportunity to serve on the staff of the Maine legislature opened, and they moved briefly to Gardiner and then Readfield in 1986. Daughter Julia, their greatest blessing, was born later that year. John was long interested in and became a student of historic preservation. He was a dedicated volunteer for many years at Service Core of Retired Executives (SCORE) and was a regular volunteer at the Readfield Library and Readfield Historical Society. John was a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Mayflower Society, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. He was predeceased by Julia in 2023. He is survived by Regina.
