John Bell Mathews ’52
John Bell Mathews ’52 passed away on August 12, 2009. He came to Dartmouth from New Rochelle, New York, and majored in English. He was a member of Zeta Psi. John then earned a master’s in theology at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1955 and a Ph.D. in 1965. In 1960 he joined Hanover College, an Indiana institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. He served there as a theologian and an educator until his retirement in 1996 as a professor of theology, head of the theology department, and associate dean. John was survived by his wife, Doris, whom he married in 1952, just before graduation from Dartmouth. Children James, Steven, Thomas, Jeanne, and Kristine, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren also survived him.
