John Aird Coutts Greppin ’59

John Aird Coutts Greppin ’59 died on May 3. He entered Dartmouth from the Allendale School in Rochester, New York, but left the College during his freshman year. He later earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Rochester. In 1972 he received a Ph.D. in Indo-European studies from UCLA. After teaching at the Woodstock Country School in South Woodstock, Vermont, and working in Soviet Armenia on a U.S. State Department grant, John taught for about 35 years at Cleveland State University, retiring as a professor in 2010. His academic specialty was classical Armenian. He founded the Annual of Armenian Linguistics and served as its editor for 25 years. He was also a coeditor of Raft, a journal of Armenian poetry and criticism. During his career he authored 16 books and about 500 articles and reviews. John leaves his wife of more than 50 years, Mary, children Sarah and Carl and their spouses, four grandchildren and brother Ernest. His brother, James, predeceased him.
