John Addison “Jack” Reed Jr. ’54

John Addison “Jack” Reed Jr. ’54 passed away September 17, 2024, in North Andover, Massachusetts. Jack came to Dartmouth from Bay Village, Ohio, and Bay High School. A history major at Dartmouth, Jack was a member of Delta Upsilon, Foley House, and Green Key Society. He was also executive business manager of The Dartmouth, sang in the Glee Club and Injunaires, and participated in Navy ROTC. After graduation Jack met and married Nancy Campbell, completed his military service, and studied history at the University of Amsterdam. On returning to the United States he earned an M.A. in history from the University of Michigan in 1958 and began a 27-year career with the U.S. Department of Defense, with postings in Paris, London, and Bonn. In retirement, Jack and Nancy had homes in Vermont and Florida. He enjoyed travel, playing bridge, and leading a foreign affairs book group and foreign policy forums. Jack had a lifelong interest in singing. In addition to performing as a soloist in Europe and the United States, he and Nancy, an accomplished pianist, gave many recitals in New England, Maryland, and Florida. Never one to forget Dartmouth, Jack was an alumni interviewer for 27 years. Jack was predeceased by Nancy in 2013. He is survived by children John, Elizabeth, Jeffrey ’84, and Jamie; their spouses; eight grandchildren; and companion Ginny.
