Jerome M. Block ’51

Jerome M. Block ’51, M.D., a much-honored neurologist in New York City, died on December 18, 2020, at his home in Tenafly, New Jersey. He was described by family and friends as a compassionate physician and teacher who loved being a doctor and cared deeply for his patients. Jerry attended Dartmouth’s two-year medical school and graduated in 1954 from the Harvard Medical School. After two years in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander he joined the staff of Lenox Hill Hospital, where he served for decades as chief of neurology. He was also a clinical professor of neurology at New York University’s School of Medicine. Jerry was recognized regularly as among the best doctors in New York and received numerous teaching awards. At Dartmouth Jerry was a member of Pi Lambda Phi, the varsity lacrosse team, and the German Club. In retirement Jerry was an enthusiastic fisherman, enjoying fly, fresh, and saltwater fishing. His family was at the center of his life. He met his wife, Tazuko, during his Navy service in Japan. She survives him, along with two children and two grandchildren. All remember him as warm, witty, loyal, wise, and always of good cheer.
