Jeremy Jason Sawyer ’55
Jeremy Jason Sawyer ’55 died peacefully April 18 at Exeter Hospital, Exeter, New Hampshire following a brief illness. Born on November 12, 1933, in Winchendon, Massachusetts, Jeremy grew up on a dairy farm in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, with his parents and five brothers. At Dartmouth he majored in history and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He married soon after graduation, joined the U.S. Army, and served part of his enlistment in Frankfurt, Germany. On return to civilian life he taught high school history in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and then at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire, where he and his wife settled to raise their family. Jeremy moved from the classroom to become a guidance counselor specializing in college placement and financial aid and later served on numerous local and statewide educational boards. He was named New Hampshire Outstanding Counselor of the Year. Jeremy was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton for more than 60 years. He entered Freemasonry in 1973, became a Master Mason, and joined several other lodges, rising through various high ranks. He was coroneted with the 33rd degree in Indianapolis in 2001. Jeremy enjoyed travel, camping, canoeing, and cheering for the Boston Red Sox and the Celtics. He admitted to being addicted to ice cream and popcorn. He is survived by two brothers, his wife, three daughters (including Susan ’80), five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
