Jeffrey A. Miotke ’79
Jeffrey A. Miotke ’79 died on July 20, 2023. Jeff was born on October 2, 1957; was raised in San Jose; and attended Archbishop Mitty High School. At Dartmouth Jeff joined Sigma Nu, double majored in biology and psychology, and rowed crew senior year. Jeff served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic and later obtained master’s in public policy and international studies from UC Berkeley and Stanford. Jeff was a career diplomat, serving in various positions with the U.S. State Department in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Hungary, and Lesotho. He was also the chief of staff to the undersecretary of state, deputy assistant secretary of state, and finally chief of staff at American University of Afghanistan. Jeff was the recipient of 14 awards for leadership in a variety of roles, including for ending coups attempts, and received the Frank E. Loy Award for environmental diplomacy. Jeff was married to Sharon (who died in 2007) and they raised daughter Laura and son Tom. Jeff also leaves brother Jim and sister Victoria. As the family reports, Jeff “was the best dad, grandpa, brother, son, and friend; we miss him terribly.” A diplomatic colleague wrote: “Jeff was an inspirational mentor and role model—so super smart on every issue in a huge portfolio and infinitely kind, generous, and patient even though he had one of the busiest jobs in the State Department. He was funny, compassionate, comforting, and wise.”
