James William Keating Jr. ’66
James William Keating Jr. ’66, a retired diagnostic radiologist, passed away at his home in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, on May 20. Born and raised in New Orleans, Jim graduated from Isidore Newman School. He was a member of Bones Gate at Dartmouth, went on to Tulane University Medical School, and served as a flight surgeon and captain in the U.S. Air Force. Jim completed a radiology residency at the University of Vermont Medical School and a neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. He taught at Dartmouth and Tulane medical schools, then practiced radiology for 32 years at numerous hospitals in the country before settling in the New Orleans area. He was a fellow of the American College of Radiology and president of the New Orleans Radiology Society and the Louisiana Radiology Society. Jim was a pioneer in the diagnostic evaluation of degenerative disc disease of the spine. After retirement he published numerous articles on the economic history of Hancock County, Mississippi. A loyal son of Dartmouth, Jim served three years as president of the Dartmouth Club of the Gulf Coast. Dartmouth relatives include his father, who graduated in 1941, son James ’93, and grandchildren John ’23 and Margaret ’26. Jim’s first wife, Margaret, was his friend throughout his life. He later married Patricia, who was his companion through 31 years of marriage.
