James R. Samartini ’57

James R. Samartini ’57 passed away peacefully at his home on May 15. Jim came to Dartmouth from Shaker Heights (Ohio) High School. His major was zoology and he was a member of Phi Tau (rush chairman) and Newman Club. He obtained an M.B.A. from Harvard in 1961 and began his business career at Mead Corp., a leading manufacturer of coated paperboard, containerboard, and packaging specializing in school supplies. While at Mead in Dayton, Ohio, he was treasurer and subsequently chief financial officer. In mid career he joined Whirlpool Corp., a manufacturer of home and kitchen appliances, at its headquarters in Benton Harbor, Michigan. His positions included chief financial officer and chairman of the Whirlpool Foundation. Jim always found a way to contribute to the communities in which he lived. In Dayton he was president and board member of the Dayton Opera Association. In Michigan he served on the board of the Michigan Symphony Association. Later he moved to Kent, Connecticut, where he was treasurer and chairman of the board of the Marvelwood School, treasurer of the Kent Memorial Library, and served on the zoning board of appeals. He was a Eucharistic minister and financial council member of Sacred Heart Church in Kent. Jim demonstrated loyalty to Dartmouth by serving as alumni fund class agent, leadership agent, and fraternity/sorority agent and on the reunion giving committee for 13 years. He is survived by his wife, Julia; sons David, James, and Patrick; grandchildren; and stepgrandchildren.
