James R. Donnelley ’57
James R. Donnelley ’57 passed away on September 25, 2018. Jim grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois, and graduated from Deerfield Academy. At Dartmouth he majored in international relations, worked on The Dartmouth all four years, and was its associate news editor. Jim belonged to the Dartmouth Outing Club every year and the Flying Club his junior and senior years. He was in the Navy ROTC, served in the Navy on a destroyer, and received his dolphins in the submarine service. Jim went on to earn an M.B.A. at the University of Chicago before joining R.R. Donnelley & Sons printing company, founded by his great-grandfather. During a long tenure, he saw market changes, expanded the company internationally, and guided it through technological change. He retired as vice chairman and continued after on the board. Jim was passionate about youth and education. He served on the boards of the Chicago Public Library Foundation, the Chicago Youth Centers, and the National Merit Scholarship Corp. He was a dedicated board member of the Associated Colleges of Illinois and Lake Forest College. He was a member of the Chicago Yacht Club, the Mid-America Club, the Racket Club, and the Casino Club. He will be remembered by many in the Chicago area and afar as one who “always enjoyed a good cigar, a martini, and the company of family and friends.” He is survived by Nina, his wife of 38 years, two children, and six grandchildren.
