James Murray Burke ’74

James Murray Burke ’74, M.D., of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, died on June 16, 2021. Jim came to Hanover from Manchester, Connecticut, where he was active in high school track, cross country, and orchestra. At Dartmouth Jim was a member of Phi Sigma Psi, the Ledyard Canoe Club, and the Dartmouth Outing Club, and he played viola in the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra. Jim graduated magna cum laude with highest distinction in psychology. Jim earned his M.D. from the University of Rochester (New York) School of Medicine. He completed residencies in internal medicine and neurology at the University of Michigan, where he was chief resident in neurology and a fellowship in neuromuscular disease and electromyography. While a partner at Abington Neurological Associates in Abington, Pennsylvania, Jim was known for his expertise in neuromuscular disease and received numerous awards for teaching and patient care, including being chosen as a “Top Doctor” by Philadelphia Magazine. Jim lived life to the fullest, and his final days were spent doing the things he loved: celebrating nature as an accomplished fly fisherman chasing trout in the beautiful streams of Pennsylvania, expressing the joy in his heart by playing the viola or spontaneously breaking into song; and practicing his Catholic faith. Jim is survived by his wife, Mary; son Brian; brother Stephen; sister-in-law Linda; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
