James C. Owings Jr. ’62

James C. Owings Jr. ’62, Ph.D., a lifelong resident of Riderwood, Maryland, died on January 12 of lung cancer. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jean, son Jai, daughter Mala, stepson Cody, stepdaughter Karen and three grandchildren. Jim majored in math and was a member of the Chess Club and the Jack-o-Lantern staff. His Ph.D. in mathematical logic was awarded by Cornell in 1966. For the next 31 years Jim taught math at the University of Maryland, College Park, retiring in 1997 after having published 27 research papers. His interests included the Orioles, good food, horse racing, crossword and math puzzles and AMC Eagle autos of 1980s vintage.
