James Aloysius Burke ’59
James Aloysius Burke ’59 died on March 2. He entered Dartmouth from Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, Missouri. At Dartmouth he was captain of the undefeated freshman football team and a starting running and defensive back for the next three years. In the fall of 1958, as a senior, he played an important role in Dartmouth’s, and Coach Blackman’s, first Ivy championship football team. Jim was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Sphinx and an active participant in the Newman Club, serving as president during his senior year. After a stint in the Army Jim had a career in the advertising business, first with advertising agencies and companies, including Time, and later in northern New England as the owner of Burke & Co. Advertising in Burlington, Vermont. He leaves his wife of almost 20 years, Jane, daughter Celia, sons Christopher and Dan, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister Regina and his former wife, Angela. His brother and two sisters predeceased him.
