Jack M. Seymour Jr. ’62 died on September 26, 2016, at his home in Saratoga, California. As a Navy “brat” Jack grew up around the world, launching first on an academic interest and then a career in world affairs. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Tau, Dartmouth Outing Club and Army ROTC. After five years as an Army officer Jack embarked on a 27-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, serving in Yugoslavia, Poland, Germany and Belgium as well as the U.S. State Department offices of Eastern European Affairs and Central European Affairs. He spoke French, Serbo-Croatian, Polish and German. Jack earned a master’s in international relations from Boston University. Jack helped expand American contacts with church-affiliated political parties, journalists and intellectuals who joined with farmers and workers to form the Solidarity party in Poland behind Lech Walesa and paved the way for democracy. His last task before retiring was in support of the American role in the “Two-Plus-Four Talks” on the reunification of Germany. Jack enjoyed fencing, skiing and swimming as well as opera, art, literature, history and visits with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marshall, a watercolorist, teacher, docent and partner in a family-owned vineyard and agricultural business. He is also survived by two sons, three grandsons and a brother and his extended family.
