Howard O. Child ’65
Howard O. Child ’65 died on October 29, 2024, in Sandpoint, Idaho, after a brief illness. He came to Dartmouth from Middletown, Connecticut. An economics major, he was head usher for the Council on Student Organizations and active in the Dartmouth Outing Club and Winter Sports Council. He earned an M.P.A. from Syracuse University in 1967. An enduring belief in civic responsibility and the power of people working together guided his life choices. He worked in public-sector management and accounting, first for the state of Oregon and then for the University of Washington and State University of New York-Buffalo. Later in his working life he studied computer science, which he applied to point-of-sale and lift-access systems for Booth Creek Ski Holdings. Since moving to Sandpoint in 2008 he volunteered with Friends of the East Bonner Library Council, Panida Theater, and KRFY Community Radio. He served a term as Westside fire commissioner and was a regular poll volunteer. Howard learned to ski at age 3, and his love for the sport grew stronger throughout his life. He was a certified alpine and Nordic ski instructor for more than 50 years. This career took him from Holiday Mountain, New York, to Crystal Mountain, Washington; Timberline Lodge, Oregon; Cardrona, New Zealand; Alpine Meadows, California; Mount Spokane, Washington; and, since 2008, Schweitzer Mountain, Idaho. He is survived by wife Jois; sons Peter, Timothy, and Jonathan; granddaughter MacKenzie; and great-granddaughter Olena.
