Howard “Herb” Bennet Herbert ’59
Howard “Herb” Bennet Herbert ’59 died on January 27, 2014, in Alexandria, Virginia, after a yearlong battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Howard entered Dartmouth from Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. At Dartmouth he majored in sociology, was president of Tau Epsilon Phi and a two-year member of the Interfraternity Council, Germania Club and Jewish Life Council. The Aegis write-up notes, “Our illustrious president Herb ‘The Bear’ Herbert could always be relied upon to bring color to the scene.” After graduating Herb served in the New York State National Guard before joining his family’s business, Towncliffe Inc., a high-end women’s clothing company on Seventh Avenue in New York City. After the family sold Towncliffe in 1966, Howard went to work for Kirkland Hall and Augustus as vice president of manufacturing and operations. Howard was known on Seventh Avenue as the guru for manufacturing of women’s luxury suits. Howard loved reading crime and mystery novels. He enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, barbecuing, coaching Little League baseball and soccer, body surfing waves and watching all kinds of sports, especially the New York Mets and Jets. His dog Charlie accompanied him everywhere. His family closed his obituary by saying, “Dad was a selfless man, hardworking, brave, moral, highly intelligent, strong, dependable and caring.” Howard and his wife, Margaret, lived in Bronxville, New York, from 1972 to 2009 before moving to Virginia in 2010. Margaret, his wife of 42 years, four children, six grandchildren and two brothers survive Howard.
