Ho Keung Freddie Fu ’74,

Ho Keung Freddie Fu ’74, M.D., eminent orthopedic surgeon and educator, died on September 24, 2021, in Pittsburgh of complications from melanoma and a bleeding kidney. Freddie was the David Silver Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and chair of the orthopedic surgery department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Freddie came to Hanover from St. Paul’s College secondary school in Hong Kong. At Dartmouth Freddie was a member of Alpha Chi Alpha, a member and officer of the Chinese Student Association, and intramural ping pong champion. He graduated summa cum laude with high distinction in biology. Freddie earned a bachelor’s in medical science from Dartmouth Medical School and an M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Following a general surgery internship at the Brown University program in medicine, he returned to Pitt for an orthopedic research fellowship and residency training. Freddie founded Pitt’s world-renowned sports medicine program and was head team physician for Pitt’s athletic department. During the 1990s he helped to revolutionize anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and treatment. Freddie was a supporter of the arts in Pittsburgh. He also served as an alumni admissions interviewer and was a member and officer of the Dartmouth Club of Western Pennsylvania. Freddie is survived by his wife, Hilda; daughter Joyce ’03; son Gordon ’99; five grandchildren; mother Mabel Foo; sisters Susan and Jeanette; and brothers Frank ’72 and Nigel.
