Henry J. McCourt Jr. ’60

Henry J. McCourt Jr. ’60 passed away peacefully at his home in Brockton, Massachusetts, on February 19. He was the husband of Carmella (Capozzoli) for 61 years. Hank was born in Brockton, the son of the late Henry Sr. and Mary (Palkens) McCourt. At Dartmouth Hank was a member of the Aquinas Catholic Student Center and Phi Beta Kappa. After he received his A.B. Hank went on to earn his master’s from Tuck School of Business. Graduating from the Army ROTC program, he served as a first lieutenant during the Vietnam War. After discharge he began a business career in accounting and finance that spanned four decades. Hank worked as the assistant treasurer and cash manager for the Howard Johnson’s Co. When it was sold, Hank returned to private tax accounting and maintained a practice of his own. Hank and Carmella walked together daily for more than 50 years, regardless of the New England weather, and he got to know many people through this routine. He coached his children in youth baseball and basketball. He also enjoyed gardening with his wife and going to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he swam daily. His greatest joy was his family and helping others. Hank and his wife served as faithful eucharistic ministers. His battle with illness and disease made him an inspiration to many. Besides his wife, Hank is survived by children Karen, Mary Glenn, and Henry III and six grandchildren.
