Harold Alexander Wiper Jr. ’52

Harold Alexander Wiper Jr. ’52 of East Dennis, Massachusetts, passed away on May 9. “Sandy” was a graduate of Deerfield Academy before entering Dartmouth. At Dartmouth he majored in geology and was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Dragon Society. He also played baseball and football. Following college Sandy served for two years as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and, upon discharge, entered Boston University to earn a master’s in education. Around this time he met and married Olive Thacher. He then started a career in teaching, first at Suffield Academy in Suffield, Connecticut, where he taught biology and geology and coached baseball and football. While at Suffield Sandy and Olive had three daughters and he added a master’s in biology from Boston University. After five years at Suffield, Sandy moved on to Newton (Massachusetts) High School, where he taught for 30 years and coached for 15. He also became active in education association work, chaired numerous conventions and served on several science education committees. He taught many summers in Colorado and the family enjoyed extensive travel in all 48 contiguous states. Sandy retired in 1991 and he and Olive moved to Cape Cod. They continued their travel, including to international sites. Olive, daughters Diane, Nancy and Susan, their spouses, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive him.
