Gregory S. Horne ’57

Gregory S. Horne ’57 of South Orleans, Massachusetts, passed away of heart failure at home on November 20, 2020. Greg graduated from Coral Gables (Florida) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in earth sciences and geology, was a member and social chairman of Sigma Nu, and belonged to the Dartmouth Outing Club and the geological society. Greg joined Getty Oil Co. and worked for seven years in Wyoming, Pakistan, and the Western Sahara. He earned a Ph.D. in geology at Columbia University in New York City. In 1968 he began a teaching career at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, as a professor in the department of earth and environmental sciences. In 1978 he was granted a Fulbright research fellowship at the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim. Greg inquired extensively into the modern coastal development of southern New England and his research was published—“Bedload-sediment transport through the Connecticut River estuary” and “Response of the Connecticut River estuary to the late Holocene sea level rise.” He also published on topics related to his research in Newfoundland, Norway, and Central America, including “A mid-Cretacious ornithopod from Central Honduras” in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology in 1994. After teaching for 32 years, Greg retired in 2000 and moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He was active in coastal studies for the town of Orleans, Massachusetts, and with the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He is survived by wife Carolyn, son Craig, and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter Melinda.
