George W. Clendon Jr. ’52

George W. Clendon Jr. ’52 passed away on May 2 at home in Summerfield, North Carolina. He was just a couple of weeks shy of his 87th birthday on May 21. George was born and grew up in Harrington Park, New Jersey, and graduated from Dumont (New Jersey) High School in Dumont. At Dartmouth he majored in chemistry-zoology and was a member of Chi Phi and both the track team and the 150-pound crew. During his first year in college he was a New England Golden Gloves boxer (160 pounds) and went on to the Olympic trials. After college George became a dye salesman in the textile industry and spent the next 60 years or so in that business. Much of his career was spent in sales and sales management with Atlantic Chemical and Equipment Co. and, nearing retirement, he was with M. Dohmen in the Southeast. He was a true outdoorsman and was an avid sportsman, enjoying golf, tennis, skiing, fishing and hunting trips. At home he could be found in his garden, which he tended with much enjoyment. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ann; son Edward “Alex” and his wife, Charla, and children W. Logan, C. Reece and Peyton; and daughter Courtney and her husband, Jason, and children Isaac and Miles.
