George Marshall Howard ’52

George Marshall Howard ’52, M.D., of Dobbs Ferry, New York, and Salisbury, Connecticut, passed away on April 22 at Harbor Point in Centerville, Massachusetts, surrounded by family. George was born on June 12, 1930, in Detroit. He was valedictorian of his Highland Park High School class, a member of its orchestra, and leader of a jazz band he created, starring as a trumpet player. He was an accomplished musician who played in jazz bands well into his later years. George graduated from Dartmouth, where he majored in philosophy and was a member of Zeta Psi, Barbary Coast Band, Dartmouth Christian Union, and Ledyard Canoe Club. He was always an active Dartmouth alumnus. He attended the Union Theology Seminary from 1952 to 1953 and graduated from Albany Medical College in 1959 and Harvard University Mass Eye Infirmary in1964. George began his lifelong ophthalmology career in 1964 at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute-Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and retired 44 years later, in 2008. He was also a professor of clinical ophthalmology for many years. He was an active member of the American Society, Royal Order of St. John (appointed by Queen Elizabeth II), the St John’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury, the New York Athletic Club, the New York Yacht Club, and the Ardsley Country Club in Ardsley Park, New York. A loving father, he is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy, daughter Camille, son-in-law Bruce, and two grandchildren.
