George E. Dodge Jr. ’57
George E. Dodge Jr. ’57 of Newburyport, Massachusetts, passed away on April 13. Ed played ice hockey at Dartmouth and was a member of Psi Upsilon. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wisconsin. Ed had a lengthy and successful career as both a freelance and Boston advertising executive, working his way from the mailroom to writing copy to managing large accounts. After retiring he took on the role of entrepreneur as owner of the Pierce Gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He became an accomplished and prolific painter, producing many fine works of art. A true visionary, Ed was a founding member of the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority, a grassroots group of citizens who catalyzed the rebirth and reconstruction of Newburyport. The work became a model for redevelopment of Portsmouth and other communities. His dedication to revitalizing the potential and beauty of Newburyport is honored to this day. Ed was a family man committed to his children. He coached youth sports and could be found on many early mornings in cold hockey rinks and afternoons in the stands lending his support and cheering on his flock of Clippers. Ed and Sandy, his wife of 62 years, ultimately retired and spent many years wintering in Naples, Florida. They happily returned to their beloved Newburyport during the summer or to their camp on Sebago Lake, Maine. Ed then rediscovered his passion for golf. He is survived by Sandy, five children, and nine grandchildren.
