George August Moerlein ’52
George August Moerlein ’52 passed away on February 9 in Anchorage, Alaska. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on March 15, 1930; went to Cincinnati Country Day School; and graduated from Dartmouth with a geology major. While in college George and his middle school sweetheart, Judith Straub, married and began their family. When he was offered a job in Alaska, the family drove up the Alcan Highway in 1961 to a new home on O’Malley Road in Anchorage and never moved again. George spent his career as an independent geologist, consulting for a diverse clientele throughout Alaska. The outdoors was their wonderful life. George was the complete outdoorsman, as were his sons. He was a founding member of the Anchorage Nordic Ski Association, a lifelong member of the Pope & Young Club, a national archery association dedicated to sportsmanship. He and his wife joined the Northern Scottish Highland Dancers, traveling to perform in Canada and the Lower 48. The Bird Treatment and Learning Center (Bird TLC) was founded from this early volunteer effort and remains a treasured organization. George was predeceased in 2017 by Judith, brother Carl Jr. ’56, sons Michael and Gilbert, and daughter-in-law Kristine. He is survived by sons Andrew ’77 (and wife Donna), Timothy ’79, and Douglas; eight grandchildren, including Janelle ’06 and Katie ’08; and 13 great-grandchildren.
