Gary Joseph Stass ’60

Gary Joseph Stass ’60, who lived in New Canaan, Connecticut, for more than 36 years, died on June 18, 2013. Gary attended Pingry School before matriculating to Dartmouth in 1956. While at Dartmouth Gary majored in history and was a member of Sigma Nu. During his four years at Dartmouth his involvements included ROTC, freshman soccer and wrestling. For the past 16 years Gary contended with a form of Parkinson ’s disease involving dementia. Until the last three years he and his wife, Nancy, were able to live a near-normal life. As his condition worsened he received loving care at home from Nancy until his passing. Daughter Kyle reports that in the later stages of his illness Nancy would read to him, and that he especially enjoyed having her read from Dartmouth Alumni Magazine and the class of 1960 newsletter. Together Gary and Nancy collected antiques and folk art for more than 30 years and enjoyed the love and companionship of their daughter Kyle and much-loved grandchildren Hadley and James. Gary made a career on Wall Street in institutional sales, finishing his career with S.G. Warburg. Gary is survived by Nancy, Kyle, Hadley and James and several cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to “Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York,” specified for the support of Dr. Cote’s research in Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, Columbia University Medical Center, Office of Development, 100 Haven Ave., Suite 29D, NYC, NY 10032.
