Gary Edwin Wells ’74

Gary Edwin Wells ’74 of West Lebanon, New Hampshire, died peacefully on September 21, 2019, in Port Charlotte, Florida, with his family at his side. Gary came to Dartmouth from West Hartford, Vermont. He was active in the Interdormitory Council and served as a mentor in the A Better Chance program. He graduated with distinction in history with a focus on Native American studies. Gary always wanted to be an educator. After graduation he taught Middle School and coached in the Orford, New Hampshire, school district for nine years. In 1983 he moved to Mascoma Valley Regional High School, where he taught for 33 years and served regularly as a class advisor, head of the social studies department for many years, incumbent assistant principal for two years, and co-president of the Mascoma district National Education Association for multiple years. New Hampshire recognized Gary with the Senior Advisor of the Year Award in 2016. He also pursued his love of education as a member of the Lebanon, New Hampshire, school board for eight years, many as chairman. He was close to extended family, proud of his children’s accomplishments, and found no greater joy than being a grandfather. He enjoyed long walks, reading, fishing with his family, cheering at Dartmouth sporting events, and birdwatching for bald eagles by the river. Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, Colleen, son Gary, daughter Stefanie, and six grandchildren.
