Garry Henry Meyers ’52

Garry Henry Meyers ’52 of Stratford, Connecticut, passed away at home on June 11. Garry was born on June 26, 1930, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. After graduating from Harding High School in 1948, Garry attended Dartmouth, earning a membership in Phi Beta Kappa and the distinction of magna cum laude as an English literature graduate. Garry was a three-year veteran of the Korean War, and then earned a master’s in education from the University of Bridgeport in 1956. He taught English at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, and was a principal of the firm Tape Book before creating the first public high school special education program for emotionally disturbed adolescents in the state of Connecticut. This spurred him to devote his professional life to helping families. He pursued a master’s in marriage and family therapy from Southern Connecticut State University and became a marriage and family therapist licensed in Connecticut and Massachusetts. During their years together, Garry and his wife of 51 years, Donna, lived in Westport, Redding, Stratford, and Sandy Hook, Connecticut; Astoria, New York; and Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. Garry was also a teacher and a storyteller, but most important was his family. He is survived by Donna; children Liese, Jennifer (and husband Mark), Adam (and wife Ingrid), Melissa, Kimberly, and Chaz (and wife Valeria); and 17 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter, Rebekah.
