Frederick P. Norton ’57

Frederick P. Norton ’57 of Arkwright, New York, died on March 18. Nick graduated from Kenmore (New York) Senior High School. He majored in history, was on the dormitory committee, and served on the Athletic Council. He attended Yale Law School, earning his degree in 1960. He returned to his hometown to join his father’s law firm, where he practiced for 50 years. The firm specialized in corporations, public school districts, and families. It grew from two to five lawyers. Nick was a member of the Erie Bar Association and chairman of the New York Bar municipal law section. Nick was active in government as a trustee of the village of Kenmore and supervisor of the town of Arkwright. He served on the boards of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Theatre of Youth, and Studio Arena Theatre. He was in Rotary International for 54 years, serving as local president and district governor. In retirement Nick bought 4.75 acres overlooking Lake Erie, where he designed and built a lean-to, barn, and (with help) house. For more than 50 years Nick was a collector of prints, drawings, paintings, and sculpture. His collection was substantial (650 items in all) and included prints by Rembrandt, Durer, Rauschenberg. In 1999 he donated the collection to the Arkwright-Knox Art Gallery. Nick is survived by children Bryan, Gregory, and Kezia and their families. His wife, Alexandra, predeceased him.
