Frederick G. Merrill III ’51

Frederick G. Merrill III ’51, M.D., died at his home in Stevensville, Montana, on November 20, 2019. He had been a longtime radiologist in Fort Collins, Colorado, before his retirement in 1990. Gil loved the West, especially the mountains. He attended the University of Colorado Medical School following graduation from Dartmouth and spent 20 years in Fort Collins at the Poudre Valley Hospital as head of radiology. During his years of practice in Colorado he also served as an assistant professor in the medical school and was named a diplomate by the American Board of Radiology. In retirement he moved to Montana, where he delighted in riding his four-wheeler on off-road trails in the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains. Other pleasures included time spent with his five daughters and their families; duplicate bridge (he was a Ruby Life Master); opera and ballet performances, which led him and his late wife, Margareth, to travel to Europe’s great performance halls; golf and swimming and diving. Gil delighted in life’s small, everyday happenings, whether he was enjoying the bird life at his many feeders, his 140 trees, or the cloud collisions he could see out his picture window. At Dartmouth Gil played freshman football and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He served for four years as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, specializing in atomic warfare.
