Frederick D. Smith ’65
Frederick D. Smith ’65 passed away on July 19, 2024, in Norwalk, Connecticut. Fred came to Dartmouth from Philadelphia via Germantown Friends School; a 3-2 Tuck School graduate, he was an economics major and member of Bones Gate. Fred served in the Coast Guard on active duty and later in the reserves. Fred dedicated 25 years to IBM, where his intelligence, leadership, and work ethic were valued. He was an avid sports enthusiast and could often be found body surfing, kayaking or taking long walks with his wife, Carol, his “angel.” He coached numerous youth teams in Radnor, Pennsylvania, and cheered on his children and grandchildren in countless games, performances, and events throughout their lives, usually offering constructive pointers after victories and losses. Whether he was beating someone at chess at age 5, at hearts at age 10, or pinning them in a half nelson at 15, they would always end the contest knowing how they could have done better and that next time they would. Fred was the ultimate patriarch and family man, and family members always knew there was no one he would rather be with and no limit to his love and generosity. He is survived by Carol; children Sonya, Grace, Juliana, and Charles; and 13 grandchildren.
