Frank A. Mate ’52

Frank A. Mate ’52, M.D., of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on November 15, 2016. Frank was born on May 5, 1929, in New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers Preparatory School in 1948. He was class president for three years in high school. At Dartmouth Frank graduated with a major in zoology and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the Mountaineering Club, Dartmouth Outing Club and Christian Fellowship. He then earned his M.D. from George Washington School of Medicine in 1956; continued pediatric training in Buffalo, New York, for three years; and was awarded a two-year fellowship in public health by the State of Maryland. Frank then became the founder and first director of the clinic for exceptional children at Georgetown University and practiced pediatric medicine in Rockville, Maryland, for 35 years. Frank’s first wife, Margaret, passed away in 1984, and he married Mary Louise in 1985. She survives him, as do children Frank, Christian and John, their spouses and five grandchildren. After 40 years in the medical field, Frank and Mary Louise retired first to Gaithersburg, Maryland, and then to Frederick, and enjoyed both travel and community service in recent years. Frank was a lifetime active participant in Boy Scouts and church mission trips. He was a “people person” in both his professional and his personal lives. He was also active in the Dartmouth alumni community in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area.
