Frank Joseph Carey Jr. ’54

Frank Joseph Carey Jr. ’54 passed away in Osterville, Massachusetts, on January 19, 2022. Frank came to Dartmouth from Dedham, Massachusetts, and New Hampton School, where he was a member of the glee club and played baseball and tennis. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and was in the naval ROTC program. After graduation Frank served for two years in the U.S. Navy aboard a tanker operating in the Caribbean. He was employed by John Hancock Life Insurance Company in Boston. He then joined the Employers Group of Insurance Companies (later merged into Commercial Union Life Insurance Co.), where he spent 30 “challenging and rewarding” years, retiring as a vice president. He became a chartered life underwriter, participated in the Harvard University advance management program, and worked on special projects for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. “Business is my true interest and insurance was in the family blood,” he wrote in the class Reflections on Twenty-five Years. Frank traveled extensively, but his true love was tennis. “To each his own and tennis is my own,” he was fond of saying. He was a member of the Long Wood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and numerous tennis clubs on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He was a winner of several advanced club trophies. By his own admission he was also a “successful investor in the stock market.” Frank is survived by his sister Marilyn; niece Melissa and her husband, Tom; and grandnieces Katherine and Julianne.
