Eugene L. Booth ’57

Eugene L. Booth ’57 died on September 27, 2022. Gene graduated from Red Bank (New Jersey) High School. He majored in sociology and was in Pi Lambda Phi. He played basketball for four years and his defensive skills were key to many good Dartmouth teams. Classmates remember his role in the NCAA tournament at Madison Square Garden, when he shut down heavily favored West Virginia all-star “Hot Rod” Hundley and Dartmouth won on the last shot. Gene was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. In the 1960s Gene was freshman basketball and assistant varsity coach at Brandeis University. Later he was a systems research analyst at First National Bank of Boston. During the 1970s he was responsible for equal employment opportunity programs and OSHA compliance at Carol Cable Co. in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Gene had extensive experience in a wide range of human rights endeavors and was a mediator certified by the American Arbitration Association. He was director of educational programs for disabled students at state schools throughout Massachusetts and was on the board of the Federation for Children with Special Needs. From 1983 to 2002 Gene was executive director of the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights, managing the anti-discrimination laws in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, and credit. In February 2003 he was elected president of MLK Business Forms Inc., a minority owned and operated manufacturer of business forms. Gene is survived by wife Flora, daughter Robyn, and sons Eugene, Arnold, Edmund, and Winthrop.
