Elliott Cates ’52

Elliott Cates ’52 passed away peacefully at home in Somers, New York, on September 2, 2017. Elliott was born on November 11, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised primarily in Scarsdale, New York. Elliott attended Scarsdale High School and then enrolled in Dartmouth under a full NROTC scholarship. He majored in English (American literature) and was a member of Gamma Delta Chi. After graduation Elliott served in the U.S. Navy as an officer aboard the USS New Jersey, stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, where he met his wife, Marion. Following the service, Elliott joined his father in the family business, Enequist Chemical Co., an industrial chemical manufacturer and distributor company located in Brooklyn. He and Marion spent most of their adult years in Westchester County, New York, and retired to Somers in 2002. Elliott was a member of the First Congregational Church of Chappaqua, New York, where he served as deacon as well as a trustee. Elliott became a Mason in 1964, later serving as Master Mason of the Mount Kisco Masonic Lodge. He was also a longtime member of the Whippoorwill Club, where he was an enthusiastic golfer and writer of “Sharkey’s Corner” for the Whip magazine. In addition to his wife of 62 years, Elliott leaves behind son Thomas and his wife, Debie; son Randolph and his wife, Katy; son William and his wife, Pam; and daughter Nancy and her husband, Ed. Eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive him.
