Edward W. Daumit ’60

Edward W. Daumit ’60 of Jupiter Island, Florida, formerly of St. Louis, Missouri, died at his home on May 19. The son of the late Evelyn Saleeby Daumit and Paul P. Daumit, he graduated from Clayton High School in 1956. He graduated from Dartmouth and later was president of the Dartmouth Club of St. Louis. He joined his father in the family business, Daumit Stores. At his urging the company expanded in St. Louis and Atlanta. He became its president and it became more profitable. Eventually Ed realized that department stores were cutting into the business, closed it down and moved to Hawaii, where he was successful in the real estate business and the restaurant business. Yearning to return stateside, Ed sold his business and returned to St. Louis where he became a stockbroker with Drexel Burnham, Lehman Brothers and finally Oppenheimer, from which he retired in 2004. Ed was greatly admired in his later years for the same qualities that his Dartmouth classmates saw in him—his indomitable spirit and determination and zeal to make the most of each day and turn challenges into opportunities. Generous to a fault, he will be sorely missed by many. He is survived by sons Paul and David, who ask the class of 1960 to remember Ed by his mantra: “Carpe diem.”
