Edward S. Winsor ’51
Edward S. Winsor ’51—an Episcopal priest, college professor and inveterate sailor—died on April 10, 2015, at his home in Fort Myers, Florida. “Duke,” as he was known in his college days, was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Dartmouth and majored in international relations. He went on to earn a master’s in international affairs at Columbia University and in theology from Yale’s Berkeley Divinity School. He served as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel after four years of active duty and 24 years in the reserves. Through the years he taught political science at George Washington University, the University of Rhode Island and the Naval War College. He also served four parishes as a priest, most recently at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Fort Myers. Sailing was a consuming interest throughout his life. For 20 years he and his wife, Jean, cruised the East Coast for four months of each year. After his retirement in 1993 Duke and Jean lived on their 30-foot sailboat year-round for four years. He was commodore of the Newport, Rhode Island, Yacht Club on two occasions. In addition to his wife, Duke is survived by four children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His father, Edward S. Winsor, was a member of Dartmouth’s class of 1924.
