Edward K. Bixby ’57
Edward K. Bixby ’57 passed away September 6, 2016, from complications from a fall while visiting family in upstate New York. Ned (also called “Bix”) was born October 25, 1935, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended St. Paul public schools, where he was a varsity swimmer. At Dartmouth he was a member of Delta Tau Delta and Glee Club. A few weeks after graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Hager. (Ned and Marlene celebrated their 59th anniversary shortly before his death.) He then attended Thayer, earning a master’s in engineering. Ned spent his entire working career with General Mills, retiring in 1998 as the senior vice president of sales and distribution. After retirement Ned and Marlene became driving forces for several high-impact organizations. Through World Vision, the couple financed and maintained seven schools in central Africa that helped educate more than 7,000 young Zambians. Ned was generous to and enthusiastic of Dartmouth. For several years he served on the Thayer overseers board. As a member of the 1769 Society he made a $50,000 gift to the College. In addition to Marlene, Ned is survived by two sons, including Tim ’87, one daughter and several grandchildren.
