Edward J. Cooke ’73

Edward J. Cooke ’73 died on February 24 in his sleep at home in The Villages, Florida. A native of Shoreham, Vermont, Ed came to Dartmouth from Deerfield Academy. At the College he majored in mathematics and was a tutor in the Valley Tutorial Program, which he chaired as a junior. Ed was a member of Kappa Sigma and Dragon. After Dartmouth he began his 39-year teaching career in the Woodstock (Vermont) school district. Ed later joined the faculty of Hartford High School in White River Junction, Vermont, where he spent three decades in the classroom and coaching, eventually becoming athletic director. At Hartford High School he began the golf program, winning the Vermont state championship in 1994 and recognition as the national high school golf coach of the year in 1997. An accomplished golfer, Ed enjoyed playing during the summer at the Woodstock Country Club, and claimed two holes-in-one during his lifetime. Retiring from teaching in 2012, he moved to The Villages, where he lived his dream of playing golf whenever he wanted and never again having to shovel snow. Ed is survived by his daughters, Maria and Sara, and his friend and former spouse, Mary Jo Cooke.
