Douglas F. Egan ’79

Douglas F. Egan ’79 died on May 14 from complications related to early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s. Doug lived in Odessa, Florida, with his wife, Julie, whom he met and began dating while they attended Waterford (Connecticut) High School. At Dartmouth Doug majored in English and went on to earn a J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1982. Doug began his professional career as a transactional lawyer in the energy field, then worked for several energy companies on nonregulated power-project development and financing deals. In 1999 Doug cofounded Competitive Power Ventures, which grew into one of America’s leading providers of safe, reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible electric power under his and his partner’s leadership. He stepped away from active business management in 2015. Prior to his 25th reunion in 2004, Doug reflected: “In the spring of 1979 I could not have imagined a career developing, buying, and managing electric power plants. But life is a series of circumstances and coincidences to be taken advantage of. I became a certified deal junkie and spent the late 1980s and 1990s at a series of ever-larger energy development companies until I cofounded my own firm. I have told my sons [Aaron, Jack, and Cody] that their task in school and life is to be prepared to handle and turn to advantage whatever life throws at them. It is rarely according to plan, but plans aren’t nearly as interesting as the messy real world.”
