Donald Nemcek Jr. ’78

Donald Nemcek Jr. ’78 died on November 21, 2020. He lived in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Don was the valedictorian of Lake Park High School in Roselle, Illinois, and lived in Fayerweather Hall freshman year. Charlie Allen ’78 recalled that he first met Don on his freshman trip: “Don was a model of quiet companionship during our trek. He impressed us all with his balance and lack of ego.” “Don was every bit the Dartmouth scholar-athlete, very determined to succeed both on the football field and in his studies,” remembered roommate Steve Chamberlain ’78. “My most vivid memory of him is from freshman winter, when he crammed for three days straight with almost no sleep—ultimately missing the exam completely because he napped through it!” Don played outside linebacker and earned a letter one year. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi and involved in the Big Brother program and DOC.Don majored in psychology and went on to get an M.B.A. at the University of Minnesota. He married the love of his life, Laura, whom he had known since age 10. He became a partner at the consulting firm of Deloitte & Touche and put his skills to work for clients around the world. In retirement he focused on philanthropy and, as a longtime Lutheran, spent time helping translate the Bible into the vernacular through Vernacular Video Mission Intl. Don is survived by Laura, son Nick, daughter Melissa, and one grandchild.
